Sound Transit Considering Monorail for Eastside Transit

The Seattle Times reports that Sound Transit is considering monorail for its expansion of transit to the eastside. This is great news and gives a glimmer of hope that we may see a real, rapid, regional transportation system in our lifetimes.

Supporters of regional transportation need to make sure that Sound Transit board members are able to make a good decision using all of the available information. Based on documents we've received, agency staff are not preparing a comprehensive comparison between monorail, light rail, and bus rapid transit (BRT). It's very important that we get a full analysis that includes two key factors:
  • Cost
  • Travel Times
It's important that Sound Transit board members are contacted and know that you support a solid technical comparison between monorail and other forms of transit, including the most important factors of cost and travel times.

Board members include:

Also - if you haven't already, make sure and sign our resolution to express your interest in regional monorail.

Have studies been done on the I-167 corridor ? Perhaps a monorail line might loop down the valley, through Tacoma and back North on Hiway 99. Hitting Federal Way, Des Moines, Sea Tac, White Center, South Park and the Duwamish Valley. I know speed is important in a Route linking Seattle and Tacoma. A loop would assist in Commuter needs. I'm not sure how this could be related to the Eastside monorail but I'm glad they are giving it a look. The monorail might allow the Eastside Burlington Northern Route to be shared or used exclusively as a bike, horse and hiking trail. An important issue is a cross lake transfer station. Either at I-90 or 520 or both. Good luck wih the lobbying efforts.
