Big Demand Shown for Transit Across 520

A recent story in the Seattle PI described the very high demand for transit between Redmond and Seattle across the 520 bridge. Over 3,000 people per day make the 45-90(!!) minute trip on the Sound Transit express bus that follows that route. Just think how many would leave their cars behind if it was actually a 23 minute monorail ride instead. That would save more than 20 minutes compared to the best bus ride, and would even save more than 10 minutes compared to car trips mentioned in the article.

How important do you think monorail is for the 520 bridge? Share your thoughts below:

520 bridge transit

The problem with a monorail is that it is fixed track (ditto light rail, I'm NOT picking on the monorail). I'd rather see dedicated HOV3 lanes from I-5 to Redmond/Avondale included in the 520 bridge redesign. Yes, by all means add a monorail expansion option - pylon footprint locations in the median or some such - but I'd rather not have WA state argue out monorail vs no monorail and have that battle hold up the bridge replacement.

Yeah, I'd love to see some kind of interoperable rail transit run from Ballard & Northgate to the airport then in a loop through Southcenter, up I-405 to 520 (with a spur to Overlake/Microsoft) and back across the 520 bridge. Love it - I'd use it every single day. Later on, extend the thing to encompass the 405/I-5 loop past Bothell and Alderwood. Bravo. What a wonderful dream!

But let's walk before we run.
