Sound Transit Board Says: Take a Look at Regional Monorail

The people's voice has been heard: the Sound Transit board directed their staff to study monorail for regional transit. The board recognized that monorail offers many advantages for our region's traffic problems and should be studied as an option for King County. Check our news page for more details.

This decision was due in large part to our supporter's efforts to contact Sound Transit and tell them about the cost, speed, and space advantages of monorail. Over 1/3 of the comments for Sound Transit's expansion project specifically asked them to consider monorail.

Please take a minute to thank board members for their decision, and tell them how much you look forward to studies of using monorail and how it compares to other options for key corridors such as the 520 bridge, 405 or the dinner train route on the east side, and north from Seattle to Bothell and Woodinville. Supportive board members include:

Also - if you haven't already, make sure and sign our resolution to express your interest in regional monorail.

Wow - Go Sound Transit!

This is amazing. I never thought they would consider anything but slow, boring light rail. I can't wait to start zipping across 520 to work on a monorail! Woohoo!

Phenomenal--I had long since given up hope that common sense could ever be ascribed to Sound Transit. The key to the success (read: high ridership) of monorail is the 'fun factor'; I predict passengers will WANT to ride it rather than use it as a last alternative to their cars.

          Remember the buses...

I ride the 150 and 168/164/169 buses every day back and forth to work.

While we're all talking arteries, let's not forget the capilaries. With a low density population like Puget Sound, the success of centralized (mono|light)rail technology will be highly dependent on its feeders.

In a way, it's a boon for buses, as they will be optimally used for short and medium hauling and relieved of the corridor jobs ( where they really don't do much better than autos, since they end up stuck in traffic ).

Anyway, I would say it's really time to rethink the whole light rail thing and get the Metro bureaucrats to consider folding into the winning team: monorail.
